150TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITALY’S UNIFICATION. TORINO

with Italo Lupi
Location: Torino
Date: March 2011
Client: City of Torino

After the project for the Olympics Torino 2006, Italo Lupi, Ico Migliore, Mara Servetto, together conceived a new specific urban dress and communication graphic design for Torino and Venaria Reale on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. The three architects dressed the first Italian capital city with thousands of banners, fabric posters, flags and other decorative elements that appeared along the avenues, in the streets and on the façades of the city’s buildings.
The project features the new colour “Blu Risorgimento” (Blue Renaissance), matched in a free way with the three colours of the Italian flag. This unique colour, halfway through indigo and lavender, will remain indelible in the collective imagination. The use of the Tricolore – the Italian flag with white, red and green colour – is always widespread. Interpreted in a characteristic way, the three-coloured Italian symbol is changed and decomposed with its colours in a mosaic patchwork of combinations that optically recreates the flag.
The project involved also the OGR – Officine Grandi Riparazioni, main expositive location – with graphics and tridimensional signs.
Just out of the OGR a 12 meters tall totem, with 150 lighting disks, still watches over the venue.
